Capture the Flag Event Highlights

The Recypher team in collaboration with LUMS Women in Computing (LWiC) organized a “Capture The Flag (CTF)” event at LUMS on July 15, 2023. This was a one-day boot-camp event with the objective of raising awareness among participants against the cybersecurity threats and guide them on responsible and safe use of Internet. This event was attended by 45 participants, including university and high school students from different disciplines.

The participants were introduced to the basic concepts of security and privacy through an interactive lecture conducted by LUMS computer science senior students.

The specific topics covered in these lectures, included:

  • Basic understanding of the Web components and Web programming.
  • Common security vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Types of common cyber-attacks

The lecture was followed by a series of simulation exercises that provided an immersive experience to participants. There were 6 simulation exercises, which tested the participants’ newly acquired cybersecurity concepts. These exercises cemented their knowledge of common cyber-attacks by allowing them to carry out stored and reflected cross-site scripting attacks, and SQL injection attacks. The participants also learned the syntax of some of the important coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and SQL.

In the end, there was a closing ceremony in which certificates were distributed to all the participants. There were two outstanding achievement awards to acknowledge those high school students who did exceptionally well to solve the simulation exercises.
